Instagram for Woodworkers and Makers – Part I (Introduction)

Introduction to Instagram

Full disclosure: I did not know what I was doing when I started out and still really don’t.

I do not claim to be a social media expert or even proficient at it for that matter. I get a lot of questions from up and coming and even established woodworkers and makers asking for tips and tricks on Instagram account growth, engagement, and marketing. There are plenty of awesome wood workers and makers with many, many times the followers that I have.

At the time of writing this, my Instagram account is currently around 14 months old with 16.7k followers and 625 posts. When I started I used to track how many followers I added in a certain period, how each post performed, etc, etc. I don’t really do that anymore. After posting for a while you kind of figure out what works as far as content, timing, hashtags, etc.

I see lots of woodworkers and makers with decent content, 1,000 plus posts, and still under 10,000 or even 5,000 followers. There really isn’t any reason that this should be the case. My goal with this series is to help you maximize the returns on the time and effort you put into Instagram to grow your engagement and organic follower growth. Whether you want to grow your woodworking/maker followers, potential customers, or both!
